BIRAX Grantees research workshop, London 2023

The BIRAX research workshop was held in March 2023 as part of the UK-Israel Science Days in London. The workshop was attended by grantees, who are leading researchers in their field, and by early career team members of their labs. The workshop was also attended by stakeholders such as medical charities, funders and government representatives who were interested to hear of the latest updates of BIRAX research and to connect with the researchers.

The workshop offered a chance for the participants to share innovative research, discuss future opportunities, and meet their funding partners. Beyond the exchange of knowledge, the workshop involved the grantees in identifying and shaping potential programmatic components to enhance focused community building and collaboration. The day began with three presentations of the BIRAX funded projects, demonstrating the varied scope of research around ageing. Presented topics ranged from coronary heart disease, microstructural MRI of the ageing brain, stems cells-based therapy of leukemia, macular degeneration and more.

In the second part of the workshop, quick fire presentations were given by early researchers from our GROWTH programme (PhD in STEM for Palestinian students in Israeli Universities) while providing all researchers in the room an opportunity to engage and for the GROWTH fellows to develop the next step of their academic careers with UK and Israeli world leading researchers.

Finally, the workshop closed with our guest lecture : ‘Immunotherapy to Deceit Dementia’ by Professor Michal Schwartz, of Weizmann Institute of Science, and Israel’s 2023 prize laureate in Life Sciences, for her Alzheimer groundbreaking research.

The day concluded with UK Grand Reception at the Wellcome Collection, celebrating UK-Israel scientific collaboration and achievements.
